I'd suggest to adapt the patch by Mike from the 
http://www.cups.org/str.php?L3495
report to your cups-1.4.6. But note that doing so requires to rebuild 
cups-1.4.6 from the sources and replacing only the respective backends (not 
installing the complete rebuild system).
