network printing

Hi I'm new to linux..

I am currently running Puppy 5.2.5 and would like to add a network printer.

Under windows I just clicked on
add printer
network printer
typed in 10.0.5.4
chose the printer from the list
was done

I tried to install using cups
Using ipp, http, appsocket etc I just typed http://10.0.5.4 (hoping that at least one would work that way) and I used a ppd file for that printer that I found online. the printer always seemed to install but whenever I tried to print something it was always held and gave the message"/usr/lib/cups/backend/http failed"

any ideas?
