Talk to printer before a job in CUPS model

Is there a chance to send a query command and receive its feedback before processing the job?

More info about the context:
Our CUPS driver work in this way: PDF->Our filter->port monitor->backend

Our printer has multiple trays, each tray expects unique page order and orientation. So the CUPS driver needs to know what setting is on the printer firmware.

Is this possible to implement in CUPS environment, and how? in filter or port monitor?
