Searching archives produced no hits on "canon mf43", "mf4360", "mf4370" or
"mf4390". I have a MF4370dn.

I know this is a proprietary driver package: canon-o1113enx_l_ufr220.zip.
Latest provided version is 2.20, now 6 months old. Canon's drivers worked in
Fedora 14 and openSUSE 11.3, both of which were released before 2.20. Fedora
15 & openSUSE 11.4 were released after 2.20, and neither can print from apps,
though a test page can be made successfully from 11.4's YaST2 printer setup
applet. I filed a SUSE bug, but it was deemed invalid. I reported the problem
to Canon, but got no response via email, and IIRC, had to fill out a web form
by proxy to make the report, which didn't provide me a copy of whatever
dialog there may have been.

This is really annoying, as the retail box my printer came in included
pre-printed text that Linux was supported. Only after I couldn't find Linux
drivers did I find out by contacting Canon by phone that Linux is not
supported by its printers for North American users.

Since it did used to work, and a test page does still work, isn't it possible
that the problem I'm having is actually due to some post-11.3/F14 CUPS change
that amounts to a bug in CUPS?

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=683476 is the bug I filed for
openSUSE 11.4. It includes the driver download URL.

Current cups packages installed in 11.4, freshly updated, are:
