Initially the printer kept reinitialising as soon as I printed from a wrong driver. After a firmware upgrade, the printer just chooses to ignore any requests to print.

When all else fails Laserjets usually obey the ancient HP LaserJet 4+
driver. Nothing fancy. No high DPI, no paper selection. But the
printer is no longer a paperweight.

rpm -ivh hplip*.rpm (and possibly hpijs*.rpm) You should get (at least)
one file called /usr/lib/cups/backends/hp or
/usr/lib/cups/backends/hplip. It should also start a hp-something-d
process.

Setup the printer using the Cups tool as an hp:// or hplip:// printer.
