Ghostscript 9.xx does all color rendering via ICC profiles.
Unfortunately, the ICC profile that is used to handle the /DeviceCMYK color
space does not preserve pure black (i. e. CMYK values like [0 0 0 k]) but
instead renders at least part of the black component as a combination of
cyan, magenta, and yellow.
This not only contradicts the usual semantics of a device color space but
leads e. g. to dithered gray output on blackand white devices like label
printers.
The now updated version of the gstoraster filter works around this bug (or
is it a feature?) by replacing such black-only CMYK colors by the equivalent
gray value.

See the links at www.cups.org for details and URL.
