is CUPS 1.4.4-7 non-deterministic or error prone?

Hi,

CUPS 1.4.4-7 (debian squeeze) was running fine for 2 weeks. Suddenly
after some changes of ppd files CUPS claimed to accept jobs from a suse
machine:

suse111:~ # lp -h cups -d hl5270 -o media=Tray1 /tmp/david.ps
lp: format „application/postscript“ not supported
(translated from german: lp: Format „application/postscript“ nicht
unterstützt!)
I'm printing from SuSE11.1, queues inserted in printers.conf manually,
no PPD files in ppd-directory.

Two printers hl5270 and hl5270li with the same error. I stopped and
restartet the debian print server, I rebootet. Nothing helped. I
searched for hours! error.log displayed the unknown format error.

I saved /etc/cups/printers.conf , /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and
/etc/cups/ppd/*. I've never edited other CUPS-files in my life. I purged
cups and I re-installed. I played back the two files an the PPDs - and
all worked fine!! CUPS - non-deterministic or error prone?

BTW: CUPS did NOT work properly after play back of files, one execption:
printing to hl5270li worked but not printing to hl5270! Same error:
„application/postscript“ not supported. I exchanged the new and directly
from Brother downloaded PPD file for HL-5270, I took the 3 years old PPD
file for HL-5270 from Brother. And it worked! Printing was possible.
After a hour I played back the other PPD-file and and this PPD works
again, no error. Is CUPS 1.4.4-7 non-deterministic or error prone?

Ekkard
