Hi,Sir,

Thanks for your kindly reply.

We want to disable the query from OS, so would you please help to check two more questions as below:

Two more questions about it:
  1. Is it OK to remove “Postscript” from CMD key? Does it impact other printing function?
  2. If the POSTSCRIPT is changed to “PostScript Level 3 For Mac Emulation” which is defined in 1284 Command set, does OS still ask for language level?

That’s appreciated to get your kindly support.

Thanks & Best Regards!
Hao

Hi, Sir,

Our printer provided 1284 device ID without Postscript level as below:
 CMD:PDL,PCL,PJL,POSTSCRIPT.

So Mac OS will check the language level if there is no clarification in the 1284 device ID, is it right?

No, it will pretty much always check the language level and version if it reports itself as a PostScript printer...

Thanks & Best Regards!

Right, it is trying to get the make and model for driver matching - does your printer provide a 1284 device ID?

Hi, Sir,

Thanks for your information. After check the query data, that looks like Mac query the language level and PS version. Enclosed is the captured file.

So, it is standard behavior in Mac OS, right?

Thanks!

Best Regards!

The APAutoSetupTool keyword is used on Mac OS X. If this isn't defined and the printer supports PostScript, a PostScript query job will be sent using the query commands defined in the PPD file.

Hi, Sir,

Would you please explain which keyword is used to define the auto-setup utility? We checked our PPD file, that looks like no similar keyword was used.

That’s appreciated for your kindly support.

Thanks & Best Regards!

This isn't CUPS doing the query.

On hot plug, an Apple system process (makequeues or makequeues_agent depending on the version) runs to add the printer if it hasn't been already. If a compatible driver is found, the driver's auto-setup utility (defined in the PPD file) is run to query the printer and set any installable options, etc. In the case of a PostScript printer, that query might be in the form of a PostScript query job using PJL if the PPD says to use it.

PS: Mac-specific questions are best posted to the Apple "printing" list.

Request more explanation about printer query
Dear Sir,

While one USB printer is connected to Mac OS 10.6 or Mac OS 10.7, CUPS will send out PJL query command to printer. Would you please explain the purpose? Where to get the definition or specification?

Thank & Best Regards!
Hao
