Only a guess:

I guess you mean that you use the Laserjet 2420DN in PostScript mode
but the Laserjet 1320 uses whatever driver was installed for it
under Windows - which means for the Laserjet 1320 there could
be a PCL driver installed under Windows.

Does the Laserjet 2420DN print faster when you use a PCL driver?

According to
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_2420.html
the Laserjet 2420DN belongs to the APDK device class(es) LJMono
and Postscript where LJMono means the printer understands PCL
(usually at least PCL5e) so that you can use various PCL drivers.

E.g. the generic PCL5e Ghostscript driver "ljet4" or the HPLIP drivers
"HP LaserJet 2420 hpijs pcl3" and "HP LaserJet 2420 pcl3, hpcups".
