Avahi / Airprint and CUPS

I know this really isn't a CUPS issue, but i'm hoping someone will have suggestions as i'm about ready to pull out my hair!

so here 'tis

got 2 ipads and 2 iphones (all 4 running latest version of iOS).

have cups (just left it at 1.3.7 for now on my sandbox) and avahi all set up

using the auto-setup scripts from here

sandbox environment:  Linksys router / wap, 1 Airprint capable printer, 1 non-airprint capable printer, 1 CentOS 5.8 box w/cups on it

Here is where it gets odd...

ipad's 1 and 2 ALWAYS see the cups/avahi printer
iphone 1 SOMETIMES sees the cups/avahi printer
iphone 2 NEVER sees the cups/avahi printer

but they all see the Airprint enabled printer!!!

i've done wiresharks and can't find any real differences.  even to the point of printing out the packet with the mDNS query.  I see two questions sent (_universal._sub._ipp._tcp.local and _universal._sub._ipps._tcp.local) but only one response to iphone2 and 2 responese to the ipad's

anyone have any ideas?
