determine color of jobs

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if there is an easy way to determine wether a job is being printed using color, grayscale or b/w. I've read about the possibility to scan the spool files, but that seems like a great hassle.
The thing is... I'm working on an accounting system for a variety of printers that we've accumulated over the years... old ones, new ones, different manufacturers. I would like to see a solution that works for all printers in the same way. Any ideas anyone?
