I am trying to get a Xerox Workcentre 5655 to work with Cups 1.4.2. My old Cups server is 1.1.22 and it works fine.

I need to be able to send PCL jobs to the printer as well as PS jobs. The old server seems to be able to figure out what format the input is in, but the new server seems to assume everything is PS.

I used Wireshark to watch the stream sent to the printer and it gets a bunch of Postscript that seems to be supplied by the Cups system. If a PCL job is sent, this PCL is immediately after the Postscript. Apparently a Xerox Workcentre printer will not recognize the switch to PCL mid-job. Send the same stream to an HP printer and it works okay. Is there any way to define the printer so that it will work?

As an alternative, I tried defining a raw printer. That won't work either. Even with banners turned off it tries to put a simple text banner ahead of the PCL. This banner has line feeds without carriage returns, it is useless and because it has no form feed, it just creates some smut at the top of every job. Is there a way to get a raw printer that is truly raw?

For a PPD, I used the one that is included in the Windows drivers supplied by Xerox.
