HP Printer Won't Accept CUPS Default Settings

Problem solved. The printer is a network printer so I chose to use the Apple Air Print driver in System Preferences >Print and Fax >HP Photosmart 6510 > Drivers pane. Went back to CUPS, changed default settings, then tried again. Success! Your comments around drivers got me thinking! :) Thanks for the inspiration.

You see, the reason I'm attempting this in the first place is because I print out a lot of coupons with the Coupons.com coupon printer. To prevent coupon duplication fraud, when you choose to print a coupon using this browser plugin, it sends the coupon directly to the printer, bypassing the print dialog interface. In doing so, it automatically uses the printer defaults, not the most recent 'stickied' printing presets/settings. On a Windows computer it is simple enough to change the default printing settings, and that makes it work just fine with the coupon printer. I've managed to change the CUPS defaults on said old Canon printer and that transferred just fine to the coupon printer plugin.

You may even find that HP has already provided a preset for this particular combination...

I can successfully save the defaults (fast draft quality and grey-scale printing) in CUPS, but when I go to print something via Safari, MS Word, etc., the defaults do not show up in the printing interface. I thought maybe my CUPS wasn't working right, so I tried changing settings for another printer (Canon MX300, 5 years old) and that worked just fine in changing the defaults in the printing interface.

Called HP back, they gave me the same answer before and were quite rude to me. So, here I am... last ditch effort before I return the printer for a Canon.
