how to upgrade to CUPS 1.5.3 to solve PCL XL error

I run LinuxMint11 and lately my HP LaserJet 1012 gives me PCL XL error, insufficientMemory. I updated the HPLIP and now I tried to update from  CUPS 1.4.6 to 1.5.3. However, something went wrong during the "make install" - and I do not have CUPS anymore.
The only instructions about how to install CUPS was provided by Zebra (I think it is a printer manufacturer).
Can someone direct me to a readme file where I get more info to solve the following errors?
64: function not found
66: cannot open -d: not such file
67: Syntax error: "}" unexpected make [1]: *** [install-data] Error 2
make: *** [install-data] Error 1
