No drivers in CUPS and Canon only supply pre-compies for RPM and DEB based systems. I downloaded and unpacked the source archive cnijfilter-source-3.60-1.tar.gz and tried to follow the instructions (I'm new to Linux in general). I can now see the ppd file for the printer, but when I try to print to it I get an error. Looking at the log file I see the following:

Try the Ubuntu Forums http://ubuntuforums.org/
There are plenty of threads on how to install the proprietary Canon drivers.

You can try gutenprint, version 5.2.9 should support the MG5300 series. If something does not work, write to the gutenprint mailing list or file a bug report or support request. http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
