Regardless that this is not an Ubuntu complaints forum:

Have you already asked on an appropriate Ubuntu forum?
If yes, what was their reply? (Preferably post an URL.)

How did you come to the conclusion that CUPS is the root cause
when your particular printer model is not accessible via your
particular kernel on your particular hardware?

I don't know how Ubuntu does the kernel module loading stuff
regarding the parallel port - nevertheless the underlying basics
are more or less the same in Linux - therefore it might even help
in your case to have a look at "Parallel port printers" in
