As this is OS X-specific, please file this bug at:

    http://bugreport.apple.com

My guess is that the /etc/authorization file is out-of-sync or damaged,
preventing the normal authentication-via-authorization on OS X from
working.  That mechanism trumps HTTP Basic for local connections on OS
X...
