Also, when CUPS doesn't know how many pages it printed, it doesn't log any
useful info at all: no username, no job name.

For example, this is the line from syslog when CUPS knows the number of
pages:
Dec  8 15:39:40 printserver cupsd[25318]: myponyprinter alexk 39791
[08/Dec/2014:15:39:40 +0000] total 56 - 192.168.1.154 PPT_Slides - -

These are two lines from syslog when CUPS shows Unknown for the number of
pages:

Dec  8 15:35:09 printserver cupsd[25318]: REQUEST 192.168.1.154 - - "POST
/printers/pony-color HTTP/1.1" 200 1275 Create-Job successful-ok
Dec  8 15:35:09 printserver cupsd[25318]: REQUEST 192.168.1.154 - - "POST
/printers/pony-color HTTP/1.1" 200 342440 Send-Document successful-ok

Would be nice if it logged at least "unknown":
