any reason why you don't want to do that? On different platforms the
compile and linker flags are often slightly different. pkg-config can take
care of that without you having to do anything for that. Having portability
of cups in mind it would be a very helpful thing also. Packages that want
to link against cups could then also use the same mechanism to find out the
compile flags like for most other packages these days.
