Eventually I have solved the issues by reinstalling cups-base and by
connecting the printer to the network. After reinstallation of cups-base,
the webinterface automagically worked again. A USB connection between printer
and FreeBSD server did not work. FreeBSD did accept and find the USB
printer and even the USB program of cups could list the printer
(/usr/local/libexec/cups/backend/usb). However the printer could not be
detected by the webinterface, nor could I use lpadmin to install the
printer. I give up on that an connected the printer to the network. Then
CUPS could find and install the printer flawlessly.
