[cups] How to tell from a print test page which generic driver works best?

Hi there,

In the past I've recommend my users of network printers [1] to use:
drv:///sample.drv/generic.ppd

Sidenote: I don't like to go down the path of using vendor's ppd because
99/100 they seem to be messed up & difficult to support in my
experience.

Now I've come to notice:
lsb/usr/cupsfilters/Generic-PDF_Printer-PDF.ppd Generic PDF Printer

Given a printer test page like:
http://s.natalian.org/2015-12-16/printer-setup-page.pdf

What should I look for in order to recommend one over the other?

Many thanks,
