Hi Rick,

Run the following in the background or as a desktop window manager auto-startup :
/usr/bin/system-config-printer-applet
it uses GNOME Keyring which is analogous to OS X's Keychain for storing credentials. When printing a job that requires authentication, it will provide an authentication dialog box with a tick-box to remember password. When ticked, it won't prompt for credentials in the future.
But system-config-printer-applet will only provide an authentication dialog box when the application doing the printing doesn't have native CUPS authentication support.
Cheers,
Doug
