[cups] Requesting help in getting started debugging a printer driver.

I've posted to this list previously about 2 printers that print just fine
with CUPS except for a "Printer out of paper"
message that never goes away unless I reset the printer state somehow.

No matter what PPD file I select it never removes the "Printer out of
paper" message.

I'm open to considering debugging the low level internal of the printer
drivers if someone could just
please give me a little guidance to get started.
