[cups] What is the preferd method to connect cups 1.7.5 to cups 1.3.9

I have a large installations of cups 1.3.9 from sles 11.

I am on the transmission to sles 12 with cups 1.7.5.

What is the preferd method to connect these versions. I have trouble with lpd and ipp.

My device uri's are like this:

http://<servername>:631/printers/<queue>?version=1.1&waitjobs=false<http://%3cservername%3e:631/printers/%3cqueue%3e?version=1.1&waitjobs=false>& snmp=false
lpd://<servername>/<queue>?snmp=false

any help available?
