[cups] Set paper type on outgoing print jobs

Hi,

We're using a Xerox Phaser 7800dn with CUPS 1.7.2 (Bit long in the
tooth, I know. Will upgrade if required to fix this problem).

If our printer receives a job without a paper type specification, it
refuses to print it as it doesn't have paper of the type 'Unspecified'
available. If the print job specifies the paper type as 'Plain' the
printing works fine.

So my question is, is there a way to configure CUPS to set paper type
to 'Plain' if it isn't already defined in the printjob. Or as plan B,
is there a way to set a 'Plain' paper type on all outgoing print jobs?
