Hello,
Normally the standard terminal commands and/or Synaptic will be sufficient.
I messed up once myself, not being an expert forced to fix as follows:
- first backup current cups configuration files, classes etc.
On ubuntu serveri completely uninstalled the out dated version:
sudo apt-get purge cups
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
Followed by installation of latest edition:sudo apt-get install cups
To fix any dependencies:sudo apt-get install -f
In between check for any broken packages!
When installation is done, copy your backup configuration files to the active files and restart cups:sudo systemctl restart cups
For more details about (errors during) installation, etc: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=242497
Your commands may differ according to the servers OS.
Hope I could be of any help

Hello,
I've cups 1.5.3 installed on my server.
I want to upgrade to a newer version.
What is the good procedure to permit this and not lost the installed
printers ?
Thank you.
