I successfully connect a HP 712C InkJet printer (quite old) to my system 
using a USB to Centronics Printer Cable.

The older USB-Parallel cable that I was using with Windows XP did not 
work with Windows 7.

The newer Sabrent cable supports Windows 7 and the IEEE 1284 interface 
and was recognized by Windows 7 pro.

I can send print jobs to the printer from Mint 17.2 and Windows 7 Pro.

Sabrent SBT-UPPC USB 2.0 to Centronics Printer Cable (CN36M).
