[cups] Epson 4900 error

Hi all,

I moved our Epson 4900s off of the network and instead connected them to a Mac mini in the same room which acts as a print server. The Mac mini is running High Sierra. I thought the “communication errors” were finished but we had one yesterday. Since the error occurred, on the Mac mini print server in System Preferences>Printers and Scanners, next to the printer that had the “communication error”, it says “error” with a yellow dot, where you would typically see a green dot and “idle”.  Called Epson back and they say these "communication errors” are an issue they see with Macs and multiple printer models, and it isn’t isolated to just Epson. All they can suggest is removing and re-adding the affected printers whenever there is an error, which isn’t practical in a lab with 20 Macs that are locked down with Deep Freeze and 5 printers.


Epson hasn’t updated drivers for these printers since 4/2016, which is well before Sierra even came out. They say this driver is compatible with both Sierra and High Sierra. I find it a little suspect that the driver has had no updates for quite a while, and wonder if there could be a compatibility issue with 10.12 and 10.13


Is there anything in CUPS that can help me diagnose the “error” state that the Epson 4900 is currently in, as seen in System Preferences>Printers and Scanners on the Mac mini print server? Nothing of note in the error logs that I can see. This printer can currently receive and print, by the way. There is nothing to indicate any problem at the moment, other than the aforementioned “error" with yellow dot.
