[cups] Brother BIG inkjet, can't make it use near enough ink

Greetings cups people;

I bought this MFC-J6920DW printer to replace a CDW color laser about 2 year ago, and am finally tired of the extremely pastel printing its doing. None
of the color tweaker settings on the advanced color page I can see looking at localhost:631/printers/any profile, has any effect, as if that data is
being stripped from the data stream between clicking on print, with or without gutenprint.

Needless to say its extremely stingy in its use of ink.

Install is wheezy, completely up to date, 32 bit version.

Cups is 2.8.2.

Here is a snip of the /var/log/cups/error_log for my last attempt to
print a screen-snapshot.jpg that when viewed in gimp is exactly the
same as the original screen, except for the size of the gimp working
window. Black is dead black on screen, whether its the original or
the snapshot, but black, on glossy photo paper is a wee bit blotchy,
and would be very hard put to be any blacker, if as dark as a kodak
18 % grey card.

The error_log:

That looks somewhat like a perms problem, but its been there since at
least 2, maybe 3 years. I think its time it was fixed. FWIW, these
tweakers also had very little effect on the Brother CDW-3170DW that
held that paper box down for 7 years or so, until I could not convince
the factory tech it needed a new corona voltage generator card.

I am a CET, and if I ever get some bench space opened up, I may see if
I can fix it, a tired electrolytic capacitor would be the most likely
culprit, and I do have an ESR tester.

Where do those files its fussing about actually exist on a wheezy system?

Many thanks for suggestions folks.

And have a Merry Christmas too.
