Thanks for the feedback everyone. I just reviewed the logs of a successful print to compare them, and I see both the

errors, so I guess these errors are not related to issue of the printer not printing certain jobs, but thinking that it is.

I had previously talked to SawGrass and they confirmed the driver is up to date, but said nothing about firmware. I’l ask them about that today.

I was finally able to replicate the printing error yesterday with an iMac running 10.12.6 to a SawGrass Virtuoso SG800 printer. Printing from Photoshop 2018.

I pulled the CUPS error logs, and I have pasted what I think are the relevant sections below. I highlighted what looks like something of possible concern in red.

The printer fed the paper, and then did not print. The paper stayed half-way in the printer and I had to manually pull it out. There was no error message on the printer LCD screen. It seemed to think the job was complete. No error in the Mac printer queue UI either.

If someone can assist me in taking a look at these logs I’d appreciate it. I’m not 100% sure what the purpose of this is list is, or how many people are on it. So I apologize if this list is not the place for this type of request. I’d really like to understand CUPS logs and I thought this might be a good place to start.

What do these status messages, especially the error numbers, really mean?

What I suspect is:
From what I was able to find in the internet about these printer(s) is:
– SAWGRASS uses the respective Ricoh printers as a basis for its own modifications
on both the print head design and the software with respect to drop size and drop placing.
– That might mean that a special raster format different from the default cups-raster
(perhaps pwg-raster?) must be used, which requires a special filter in the cups filter
chain.

Unfortunately the Sawgrass web site requires to sign in resp. register as a customer using
a sawgrass printer to get any detailed information, and the freely available user manual
(Virtuose_UserGuide.pdf) doesn’t provide any information beyond how to handle
the printer.
