[cups] Add Printer

Greetings All,
Attempting to add an HP LaserJet 2055dn printer to my Raspberry Pi3.
So far, no luck. Read at CUPS website that there was a bug related to
conecting to the printer's USB port. I downloaded and installed my
cups software about three months ago, but i don't know what version i
have. If my version has the bug, that may explain why i'm having trouble.
So. . .  How do i discover what version of CUPS i am running?
           Is there a command line for that at the terminal?

Also, It seems like the CUPS web interface will not work without a
proper password on the computer. I never set a password for my pi
when i first booted it. So if that is the problem, how do i go back and
set one now?

Also, it seems that there is a way to connect to the printer using
line commands from the terminal. However a device URI is required.
So...how do i discover what the device-uri is? The HP website was
no help at all.
