[cups] @group--is this a UNIX/Linux group, or is it defined in cups-files.conf?

It's usually the latter (a group defined in the underlying OS).  

The documentation for "AuthType" included older versions of CUPS (like
1.6.3 still used in RHEL 7) says that authentication can be performed
using information in /etc/cups/passwd.md5, but that seems to no longer
be an option in recent versions of CUPS.
