can't print with lpr

did you get something to work?  i hope so.  it was good to see another
rant.  i've had an annoying problem for 6 months using CUPS, and i've just
recently found a workaround.  i love CUPS when it works, but it can really
give you headaches when it doesn't!

if you didn't get your problem working, something i found to work early in
my quest was to completely remove the lprng package and scripts.  i had
some errors early on when CUPS and lprng were fighting over the printer,
resulting in nothing being printed and lots of error logs.

if you've already gotten it working, what did the trick?  just curious.
