setting up a print server

I am trying to set up printing from CUPS to a network printer, and can
configure it with lpd, but my test page (from the web GUI) never prints. I
can print out another test page with command line (echo 'test page' | lpr -P
printername) so I think the problem must be with how I have the connection
set up.

Can anyone point me in the direction of documentation in order to under the
difference between configuring lpd, http, and socket for a printer or
provide any other useful advice?
