install order for cups/espgs

Cups needs to use espgs for certain printing functionality, and espgs can use cups "for the CUPS drivers," according to the espgs INSTALL file.  Since they use each other, which do I install first?

Also, if I install espgs into a non-standard location, what do I need to do to get cups to find and use it?  Just make sure that /path/to/espgs/bin is in my PATH before I start cups?
