Slow printing with CUPS

I have a Samsung ML1210 which seems to work well with CUPS. The printer is connected to a server via the parallel port and I have one printer added, using the ML1210 driver.

In KDE on a client machine I have added the printer, this seems to require CUPS to be running on the client too (not desirable, but fine if necessary). I use the ML1210 driver here too. When I go to print a PDF, it seems to take a few minutes per page.

What drivers should I be using on both machines? If I select the postscript driver on either machine the 'data' light on the printer flashes but it never actually prints anything. Do I really need CUPS running on the client for IPP in KDE to work? As the PDF is huge when printed (~5M according to the queue) can I somehow send it as PS and get the server to convert this?

Thanks.
