CUPS automatically stops printers

You should only make hpnpf, i.e.

# make -f linux_std.mak hpnpf

And, surely, the ID string modification is OK. I'll change it when I
need
to make other modifications.

PS: I never touched the hpnptyd stuff but left it there for copyright
reasons.
