Printing over the internet?

Dear group,

in order to give our users the chance to plot files from home, I am thinking about allowing to print with the IPP "over the internet".

So my question is: is CUPS and SSL safe enough to allow that? Will username and password be protected by SSL?

Our situation is as follows:

- Server: Linux (SuSE 9.3) with OpenLDAP
- Clients: WinXP

We'd like to authenticate the users against the LDAP database.

Does anybody have (hopefully positive) experiences with this setup? Where would the users have to give their 'username' and 'password'?
