My own reinstall of Suse 9.3 yesterday left me with my Hp 3750 usb printer not working. with the print manager ipp report showing the same message you had .
The program usbview would show the printer and it's data.
It would update on disconnection and reconnection.
However CUPS program
/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb
would only show all unknown printers:

direct usb:/dev/usblp0 "Unknown" "USB Printer #1"
direct usb:/dev/usblp1 "Unknown" "USB Printer #2"
direct usb:/dev/usblp2 "Unknown" "USB Printer #3"
direct usb:/dev/usblp3 "Unknown" "USB Printer #4"
direct usb:/dev/usblp4 "Unknown" "USB Printer #5"
direct usb:/dev/usblp5 "Unknown" "USB Printer #6"
direct usb:/dev/usblp6 "Unknown" "USB Printer #7"
direct usb:/dev/usblp7 "Unknown" "USB Printer #8"
direct usb:/dev/usblp8 "Unknown" "USB Printer #9"
direct usb:/dev/usblp9 "Unknown" "USB Printer #10"
direct usb:/dev/usblp10 "Unknown" "USB Printer #11"
direct usb:/dev/usblp11 "Unknown" "USB Printer #12"
direct usb:/dev/usblp12 "Unknown" "USB Printer #13"
direct usb:/dev/usblp13 "Unknown" "USB Printer #14"
direct usb:/dev/usblp14 "Unknown" "USB Printer #15"
direct usb:/dev/usblp15 "Unknown" "USB Printer #16"

After hours of online searches and configuring , including stopping and starting CUPS ,I gave up watched football and went to sleep( that can fix a lot of things).

Rebooting( cold start) today usbview showed the printer and
/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb
showed the id string of my printer:

direct usb://hp/photosmart%207350?serial=MY28K442X34M "hp photosmart 7350" "USB Printer #1"
direct usb:/dev/usblp1 "Unknown" "USB Printer #2"
direct usb:/dev/usblp2 "Unknown" "USB Printer #3"
direct usb:/dev/usblp3 "Unknown" "USB Printer #4"
direct usb:/dev/usblp4 "Unknown" "USB Printer #5"
direct usb:/dev/usblp5 "Unknown" "USB Printer #6"
direct usb:/dev/usblp6 "Unknown" "USB Printer #7"
direct usb:/dev/usblp7 "Unknown" "USB Printer #8"
direct usb:/dev/usblp8 "Unknown" "USB Printer #9"
direct usb:/dev/usblp9 "Unknown" "USB Printer #10"
direct usb:/dev/usblp10 "Unknown" "USB Printer #11"
direct usb:/dev/usblp11 "Unknown" "USB Printer #12"
direct usb:/dev/usblp12 "Unknown" "USB Printer #13"
direct usb:/dev/usblp13 "Unknown" "USB Printer #14"
direct usb:/dev/usblp14 "Unknown" "USB Printer #15"
direct usb:/dev/usblp15 "Unknown" "USB Printer #16"

curiously /dev/usb is only preconfigured for usblp0 upto usblp7
Anyway it worked right away.
Better minds would know between SUSE 9.3, the default firewall , ipp and CUPS what wouldn't talk to what.I wouldn't know where to start.
I had update the hpdrivers to the lastest versions(1.6?) the previous evening : the result was the same with as with the SUSE 9.3 installed version(.8?)
