SendError: 5 code=401 (Unauthorized)??

Hello,

I installed cups 1.1.22 some time ago & never really got into setting things up.  Right now, I have to get back to it & create a new printer.  Based on the docs, I try (while su'd to root):
    /usr/local/cups/sbin/lpadmin -p Belk406 -E -v socket://123.321.123.321:9100 -m laserjet.ppd

That command just hangs.  The error log then contains:
D [16/Mar/2005:11:06:44 +0500] AcceptClient: 5 from localhost:631.
D [16/Mar/2005:11:06:44 +0500] ReadClient: 5 POST /admin/ HTTP/1.1
D [16/Mar/2005:11:06:44 +0500] SendError: 5 code=401 (Unauthorized)
D [16/Mar/2005:11:06:44 +0500] CloseClient: 5

over and over and over
