Switiching from CUPS to LPR

I used to use LPR to print from my old Linux box.  RedHat suggests CUPS in the installation (RH9).  How do I switch to LPR instead.  I have two reasons:

1)  CUPS is very slow to print from my Windows XP boxes (LPR was almost instant)
2)  My XP notebooks won't go on standby (I don't know whether LPR will help that, but I'd like to try)

LPR worked fine on my old server, so I don't see any advantage to using CUPS in my case.
