You are right. Swapping the loopback and localhosts solved it.

One final question on this matter: is there an interim process that
resolves localhost to the actual hostname of the server?

BTW, I've installed 1.2.1 in a RedHat system and it worked perfectly
outright. I'm gearing towards full testing of 1.2.1 in AIX, Solaris,
and RedHat and I'm looking forward to it.
