CUPS won't play

I have followed Wintellects installation guide for CUPS to the letter, and all three of my printers show up in KDE, but none will print. I am using FreeBSD 5.4. When I try to print a test from the localhost it indicates that the test page is being sent to the printer...but nothing happens. Does the lpd daemon need to be operating?  I turned it off when I saw that I was having problems.  Anyway, anything that you can do would be appreciated.
