Epson 5500 won't print

Epson 5500
Leopard 10.5.4
CUPS 5.2.0
GPL Ghostscript 8.6.1

files and test pages will spool like normal but nothing prints. from the CUPS manager i get the following message when trying to print a self test page:

"/usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstoraster failed"


any help would be appreciated.
