Thanks - I installed foomatic-rip and that problem went away. Now I 
get an error about hpijs being missing - maybe this is due to 
compiling epsgs with the --with-ijs switch. At this rate I'll have 
compiled an entire operating system only to print...

I still don't understand why cups does not find the usb attached printer.
