Upgrading RHEL5.2 with CUPS 1.2.4 to CUPS 1.3.9

I have an installed RHEL5 server running CUPS 1.2.4 (but not configured at all, ie, we are not running CUPS yet), and I'd like to upgrade to CUPS v1.3.9. Should I proceed with this method?:
1) Remove all CUPS-related RPMs from the server (for v1.2.4), including all inter-dependencies?
2) Compile and install into the default directory structure the new 1.3.9 version of CUPS? (ie, /var, /usr, etc.)

or to be able to build and make an easier-to-move CUPS installation (for moving to other company servers), could I do step 1 above, and then place the new installation completely into the /opt directory (like /opt/cups)?

I'm not sure whether I should simply re-build this server WITHOUT CUPS in the kickstart script, and then add the v1.3.9, as I don't know what to do with all of the inter-dependencies.

Or should I go with the much older v1.2.4 already built-in to RHEL5?

Thanks,
