lp, lpr Unauthorized

I have a very simple system consisting of one linux server running samba and one XP machine to which the printer is attached.  I have been running Cups with OpenSuse 11.0+ successfully on a dual xeon system for some time until last weekend (Sept 13, 2008) update to 1.3.7 . (it was 1.37 before and its 1.3.7 still) Suddenly I no longer have printing privileges for any user or any program. Except I can print the test page from the web interface as root.

The error message is lpr:  Unauthorized

I have scoured and cleaned the cups.conf file to ensure it enables everyone.  But no change in the behavior.  I have tried various file system privileges, but again, no change in behavior.

It would be really easy to throw stones at OpenSuse but the only demonstratable problem is with the printing.  Nothing else is showing this error message.

Can someone give me a clue where to try next?
