Rendering happens in the printer via its built-in PostScript
processing unit with the CPU and memeory which is built-in
in the printer and the printer's default output resolution
is perhaps set to 1200 dpi grayscale with 8-bits-per-pixel.

Rendering happens on the CUPS server machine via Ghostscript
with all the computing power what this machine has and a
readymade 600 dpi monochrome 1-bit-per-pixel "bitmap"
is sent to the printer.

A 1200 dpi 8-bits-per-pixel image needs 32 times more memory
than a 600 dpi 1-bit-per-pixel image.
