[cups.development] printer test page reports "error" but prints to cups-pdf printer

I'm using a cups-pdf printer.

It was working ok for a while, now when I do the dialogue on 

http://localhost:631:

administration>"printer">Print Test page

it reports:

"Unable to print test page:

       Unknown"

But the file is converted to PDF!!  (I'm using /var/spool/cups-pdf/<username>

andi it appears "completed" in "show all jobs"
