Thank you, Jerome, it helped.
It clarified my mind.
Now I'm able to specify my problem im more detail:
cups is working on my machine as far as lp and gnome is concerned.
What's missing is that all of my common applications will not print:
abiword, jedit, firefox, thunderbird, netbeans.
I wonder wether I have to understand the printing concept of each of those applications.
